Ernestine M. Moln

Ernestine M. Moln, age 89 of Gaastra, MI, died Friday, May 28, 2010 at the Iron River Care Center.

Born September 13, 1920 in Norway, MI, the daughter of the late Ernest and Annie (Dellatorie) Ropele attended the Norway Schools and graduated from Norway High School in 1938.

Ernestine married Stanley Moln on May 5, 1941 in Vulcan, MI and the couple came to the Iron River area in 1951. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this year.

Ernestine was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian and former member of St. Ann's Society. She was an avid card player.

She is survived by her husband Stanley

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspian, MI, with Rev. Norman Clisch to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Norway Cemetery, Norway MI.

The family suggests memorial donations to St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian.

Robert J. Simonson
May 19, 2010

Robert "Bob" J. Simonson, age 83 of Iron River, MI, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Northstar Health System, Iron River.

He was born June 3, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of the late Wallace and Dorothy (Peterman) Simonson.

He attended the Stambaugh Schools and graduated with the Class of 1943.Immediately following his graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and served until 1946, attaining the rank of Electrician's Mate First Class.

Bob married the former Beverly Jean Brown on June 22, 1946 at the Grace United Methodist Church of Houghton. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1996.

In September , 1946, Bob enrolled in Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI, and received a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949 and a degree in Engineering Administration in 1951.

Bob was employed by Commonwealth Edison of Chicago in 1951 and served in various locations in the Chicago area for 33 years. They resided in Arlington Heights and Rolling Meadows during those years. He retired in 1984 as Division Engineer at the Northbrook headquarters.

Bob and Jean retired to their beloved Upper Peninsula so they could spend their summers at their cabin at Agate Harbor in the Keweenaw. Bob had many interests, reading, hiking, photography and his computer. His claim to fame was the publishing of his mother's journal on their year (1932-33) spent on Isle Royal where she taught the five Johnson children and Bob.

In his early years in Stambaugh, Bob attained the rank of Eagle Scout and remained interested in scouting and served as scout master for both of his sons in their growing up years.

He was preceded in death by his three year old twin sister, Betty Lou and 11 month old grandson, Russell "Rusty" Simonson..

He is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons; Kent (Janice) Simonson, St. Charles, IL, Robert Simonson, Springfield, IL; two granddaughters, Beth and Vicky; seven great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Vitton of Hancock.

Visitation: Monday, May 24, 2010 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Iron River.

Funeral Service: Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Iron River, with Rev. Manuel Padilla to officiate.

Interment: Pine Grove Cemetery, Eagle Harbor, MI

Robert V. Boden
May 18, 2010

Robert "Ace" Boden, age 85 of Iron River (formerly Stambaugh) Michigan, passed away peacefully May 18, 2010 at Northstar Health System, Iron River with his children at his side.

Born on June 4, 1924, son of the late Linus and Amanda (Ecklund) Boden attended the Stambaugh schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School in 1942. He attended Michigan State University and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWll, serving in the Pacific.

He married Dolores B. Pozniak in 1953 at the Assumption Catholic Church, Iron River, MI. and the couple made their home in Stambaugh, MI. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 2003.

Robert was employed by the M.A. Hanna Mining Company, working in the local iron mines at the Homer Wauceca and Groveland until his retirement. Involved in many civic endeavors, he directed the children's parade for the Stambaugh Athletic Association. Robert founded and directed a winter figure skating show in Stambaugh. He was active in the Iron County Steelers football and the Stambaugh hockey programs. He enjoyed playing and coaching softball, golf, and tennis. He directed the local girls' softball league and organized regional softball tournaments. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed going to camp (The Buckshot Lodge). In the 1990's he served as a playground supervisor, compassionately known as "Bus Grandpa" at the Stambaugh Elementary School. In 2005, he created the M.A. Hanna Annual Retirement Dinner.
"Ace" was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Iron River, Stambaugh Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion Reino Post #21, Stambaugh Athletic Association, a life member of Am Vets, and served on the Veterans' Board and Iron County Community Schools Board of Directors.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dolores on November 6, 2004, and two sisters, Ruth Mulder and Ina VanAlsten.

Marylee L. Symmonds
May 14, 2010

Marylee L. Symmonds, age 76 of Iron River, MI, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Iron River Care Center.

She was born July 11, 1933 in Iron River.

The daughter of the late Edward and Aldia (Liberty) Burke attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School in 1951.

Marylee married Robert Symmonds on April 25, 1951 at St. John's Episcopal Church of Iron River and the couple moved to Ann Arbor. They returned to Iron River in 1981 to make their home. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this year.

She was employed by the Ann Arbor Hospital Public Relations Department and later by Public Health of Illinois for ten years as a secretary, and also as an assistant to the County Clerk in Coldwater. MI. After returning to the Iron River area in 1982, she was employed as a secretary by West Iron County Public Schools until her retirement in 1996.

Marylee was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Iron River, served for many years on the Altar Guild, prepared weekly bulletins, and also as secretary in the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church, and was a Past President of the Lady Elks.

She is survived by her husband, Robert

Reynolds C. Makela

Reynolds "Rey" C. Makela, age 90 of Iron River, MI, died Friday, May 14, 2010 at his home.

Born: March 10, 1920 in Iron River, MI

The son of the late Volmy Vasser and Vera Makela attended the Nash District Schools and Kingsford High School. Following school, he served in the local CCC Camp.

Rey married the former Dorothy Laine on June 11, 1941 in Stambaugh, MI and the couple were lifelong residents of the area. The couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2009.

The couple owned and operated the Forest Gateway from 1967 until their retirement in 1980. They enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years.

Rey was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church of Iron River. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming, traveling in his RV and especially spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy

Ernest C. Remondini
May 12, 2010

Ernest "Ernie" Clement Remondini, 84 of Caspian, MI, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Bellin Memorial Hospital , Green Bay, WI, surrounded by his loved ones.

Ernest was born April 27 1926 in Caspian, MI to Leo and Minnie (Bortolameolli) Remondini. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Arthur, formerly of Caspian.

Ernest is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Rose Eccel, who he loved and admired. Ernie and Rose were married at the Guardian Angel Church in Crystal Falls, MI on June 16, 1951. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Mary (James) Butorac, Christine (Kenneth) Huven, and Ernest (Renee) Remondini. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Tyson (Lindsey) Butorac, Andrea (John) Sucholl, Alexandra and Angelina Remondini, and his two great grandchildren, Anthony and Eriana Sucholl.

One of Ernie's greatest joys in life was his family. He always commented on how much he loved them and how proud of them he was.

Ernie owned and operated Remondini Standard Service in Iron River for over 40 years, retiring in 1987.

He was the Caspian City Commissioner for eight years, which included being Mayor Pro Tem. He was very active in many organizations. He served on the Caspian TV board since it began. He was on the Stambaugh Cemetery Board, and he served on the Board of Director for the Caspian Non-profit Housing Corporation, Spring Valley. He was one of the directors of the Progressive Men's organization, member of the Iron County Wildlife Unlimited, and a member of the Caspian Fire Department for 30years, until becoming an honorary fireman.

Ernie believed strongly in his Catholic faith. He was an active member of St. Cecilia's Parish in Caspian. He was an usher, altar server, and member of the Holy Name Society.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus for many years, Golden "K", Trentino-Tryolean Club of Iron Mountain, Federation of Michigan Sportsman, Iron River Country Club, and Elks Lodge 1671.

Ernest loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, who for many years was the first to report his deer kill on opening day. He enjoyed working in his yard and spending time in the woods. He was a devoted family man, friend, and member of the community. He will be missed by many. His memories will live on in all who loved him.

Visitation: Monday, May 17, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River. The firefighters of the Iron Range Firefighters Association will do a walk through at 6 p.m. A Liturgical Prayer Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspian, with Rev. Norman Clisch, pastor, to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment: Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron River

Mark Rowe Misoni
May 10, 2010

Mark Rowe Misoni, age 57 of Iron River, MI, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010 at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, Green Bay, Wisconsin.

He was born on October 24,1952 in Stambaugh, Michigan.

The son of Louis and Anna Mae (VanWagner) Misoni, Mark attended Central Elementary School and West Iron County Public Schools. Throughout his life, he was employed by Heath Tree Service, now known as Asplund, Inland Steel, as a crusher operator, M.A. Hanna Mining Company/Groveland Mine, as a maintenance mechanic, and D.A. McPherson, but his true calling was to be a logger. Mark loved logging and his family was very proud that he earned his living by working in the woods.

He married the former Patricia "Patti" Jones, on December 4, 1971 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River, and they were blessed with 38 years together.
Above all else, Mark was a devoted and loving husband and father to Patti and their three girls, and a loyal friend to many.

Mark was a man who cherished the simple things in life…his family, his friends and his home. He was never happier than when he had a grandchild in his arms, or with a friend, sharing a laugh, or able to offer his hand to someone who needed his help. He will be remembered for being a man of his word, his kind and genuine nature and for his unconditional commitment to the family and friends he loved so much.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis.

Lloyd R. Bomaster

Lloyd R. Bomaster, age 84 of Iron River, MI, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Northstar Health System, Iron River.

Born: January 10, 1926 in Iron River, MI

The son of the late Ernest and Doris (Gallup) Bomaster attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School in 1943. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII. He was employed by the M.A. Hannah Mining Company for over 15 years, retiring in 1964.

Lloyd married the former Doris Autio on May 31, 1944. Doris preceded him in death on June 23, 2000. He later married Ellen (Ruona) Casagranda on November 20, 2004 in Iron River, and the couple made their home in Iron River.

He was a life member of the VFW Ottawa Post 3134 and the American Legion Alfred Branchini Post 17. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen

Norma Petroff

Norma "Nell" Petroff, age 81 of Iron River, MI, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 at Northstar Health System, Iron River.

Born: August 19, 1928 in Tipler, WI

The daughter of the late Charles and Lucinda (Gayhart) White graduated from Gladstone High School in 1946.

Norma married George Petroff on May 31, 1952 at the First Baptist Church of Iron river and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2002.

She was employed as an assembler by Coleman Products for many years, retiring when the plant closed.

Norma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Iron River. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, hunting, fishing, and especially playing bingo.

She is survived by her husband, George

Ralph A. Soderbloom
May 8, 2010

Ralph A. Soderbloom, age 84 of Iron River, MI, died Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Northstar Health System, Iron River.

Born: May 7, 1926 in Stambaugh, MI

The son of the late Carl and Emily (Anderson) Soderbloom attended the Stambaugh Schools, graduating in 1944. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was awarded three bronze battle stars. He was employed as a miner by M.A. Hanna Mining Company for many years, and after retirement worked as a contractor.

Ralph married the former Lorraine Wernholm on September 25, 1948 in Iron River and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1998. Lorraine preceded him in death on August 9, 2000.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Iron River and was a former Deacon and choir member of the church. He was also a member of the VFW Ottawa Post 3134. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, and playing cribbage. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by three daughters; Tess Davis of Springfield, OH
