Virginia “Dolly” Byczek, age 87, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Aspirus Iron River Hospital. She was born on June 9, 1936, in Escanaba, MI, the daughter of the late Milton and Loretta (Sorby) Saxon. She attended Iron River High School, graduating with the class of 1954. Dolly married Robert Byczek Sr. on June 11, 1955, in Iron River, MI. The couple celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in 2000. Robert preceded her in death on September 30, 2000. Dolly was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Women of the ELCA, women’s bowling league, and was a leader of 4-H Little Women along with her mother. She loved to draw and do crafts, cook, cross country skiing, and bowling. Dolly enjoyed spending time with family, especially around the holidays and hosted family reunions for the last 36 years. Dolly loved to travel whether by bus or plane, riverboat, car or train. She was always up for an adventure! Especially if it entailed a trip to stay with her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dolly is survived by her sons, Robert (Kathy) Byczek Jr. and Kris (Mona Thornton) Byczek, both of Iron River, MI; daughter, Debra (Luis) Caradonna of Iron River; son-in-law, Richard Johnson of Iron River, MI; siblings, Arlene (Pastor Michael) Rucinski of Iron River, MI and Harold (Patti) Saxon of Chippewa Falls, WI; grandchildren, Adena (Eric) Hinz, Hannah Byczek, Nina Kacir, Jessalynn (Samuel) Oleksy, Amy (Adam Feld) Johnson, and Cory (Nicole Buss) Johnson; great grandchildren, Leah, Bella, Gianna, Trinity, Victoria, Jadeyn, Kaitlyn, Brooke, Michelle, and Dominick; nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends, classmates, and newest friend, Bonnie. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Terri Johnson. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church of Iron River with Vicar Lance Crevier to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Iron County Cancer Unit or American Lung Association. The family extends special thanks to the Iron River Care Center, Aspirus Iron River Hospital, the local EMTs, and the ER Department personnel for all their heartfelt care.
