Albertis Pat Wernholm

Albertis ""Pat"" Wernholm, age 84 of Iron River, MI went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at the Iron County Community Hospital, Iron River. Born: August 22, 1924 in Stambaugh, MI The son of the late Victor and Theressa (Anderson) Wernholm attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School. He was a U.S Navy veteran of WWII serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Pat was in the battle of Tarawa and the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. He was in Okinawa and worked on the airstrip form which the Enola Gay took off. Pat married the former Lucille Martin on June 10, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church, Iron River and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2000. For 33 years Pat was employed as a miner by M.A. Hanna Mining Company in the local mines prior to his retirement in 1981. Pat attended the Iron River Bible Church and was a member of the American Legion Reino Post #21. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid sports fan, and in the past organized baseball and basketball teams for young people in the area. He also greatly enjoyed landscaping and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a very kind and thoughtful person and was loved by everyone who knew him. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Russell, Carl and Elvin Wernholm and sisters: Lillian Porier, Evelyn Everson, and Lorraine Soderbloom He is survived by his wife Lucille Three sons; Gary (Ann) Wernholm of Caspian, MI Don (Mary) Wernholm of Marquette, MI Victor Wernholm of Marquette, MI Two daughters; Sally (Jim) Shepherd of Charleston, WV Patty (Rob) Ward of Iron River, MI Six grandchildren Six great grandchildren Nieces and nephews Visitation: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Iron River Bible Church, Iron River. Funeral Service: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 12:00 noon at the Iron River Bible Church with Rev. Dan Waters to officiate. Pallbearers: Sons, Gary, Don and Victor Wernholm, and Rob Ward, Jesse Wernholm, Ralph Tinkey, and John Wernholm Interment: Martin Cemetery, Tipler, WI in the spring with the West Side Veterans to accord military rites.
