Alford J. Larson, age 78 of Iron River, MI died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at his home. Born: April 18, 1930 in Iron River, MI The son of the late Arvid J. and Winnie (Franquist) Larson attended the Iron River schools, graduating in 1948. He also attended technical college in Green Bay, WI. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with the Engineers in North Korea after a slow boat ride to Japan. He was in the Reserve Army for several years prior to his honorable discharge just before the Vietnam Conflict. Alford married the former Ethel Greekas on August 28, 1954 at the Ryerson United Church, Vancouver B.C., Canada and the couple made their home in Bates Township, Sunset Lake. He was employed by Caspian Construction and the Hebert Construction Company. He was also self-employed for a period of time. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River, the Carpenters Union, VFW Ottawa Post #3134, American Legion Alfred Branchini Post #17, and life member and past Elk of the Year at Elks Lodge # 1671. He was preceded in death by one sister. He is survived by his wife Ethel Son, Paul A. (Rena) Larson of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada Three step-grandchildren Ten step-great grandchildren Many nieces and nephews Visitation: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 noon at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River. The Elks Lodge of Sorrow Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Funeral Service: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 12:00 noon at the Jacobs Funeral Home with Rev. Carolyn Orchard of St. Mark's Episcopal Church to officiate. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside service in the spring.
