Alfred "Michigan"J. Godfrey, age 86, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1933, the son of the late Samuel and Myrtle (Thomas) Godfrey. Alfred attended the Iron River Schools and the White Pine High School and graduated. He later joined the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Ribbon, and the United Nations Service Medal. He employed as a miner, working underground for 15 years. Alfred was a former policeman and fireman in Iron River and a former Iron River City Commissioner. He was a member of the VFW Ottawa Post #3134, American Legion Alfred Branchini Post #17, and the former Wesley United Methodist Church. He enjoyed going on rides, hunting, and fishing. Alfred is survived by his sons, Alfred of White Pine, MI, Steven (Vickie) Godfrey of White Pine, MI, Bryan (Pearl) Godfrey of Stockton, CA, and David (Jody) Godfrey of Marietta, GA; daughters, Nancy (Richard) Reath of White Pine, MI, Vicki Lynn (Anthony) Isabel of White Pine, MI; sister, Florence (Thomas) Lantinen of Florence, WI; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Samuel, Joseph, Garnet, Edward and David and sisters, Ethel Godfrey and Myrtle “Lillian” Woolard. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 11:00 am at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River with Pastor Avery Carr to officiate. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery in the spring. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Alfred J.
