Alfred A. Stender

Alfred “Al” Stender, age 94, of Crystal Falls, MI, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls. He was born February 27, 1920 in Hamtramck, MI, the son of the late Adam and Frances (Rochna) Stender. Al attended and graduated from the Hamtramck Public Schools. He then attended Albion College and earned his Bachelor’s Degree and later his Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan. Al was a music teacher for 29 years in the Crystal Falls/Forest Park Schools. Al married the former Margaret “Maggie” Fraser on June 27, 1948 in Detroit, MI. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this past June. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and a member of the American Legion Louis Bowman Post #87 of Crystal Falls. His hobbies included painting, reading, cooking, wood carving, and fishing. Al is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Thad (Melissa) Stender of Crystal Falls; daughter, M. Amy (Tom) Labre of Spalding, MI; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and extended family.         He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edmund Stender and Roman Glazewski. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral Services will follow at 1 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Laakko to officiate.
