Alice L. Johnson, age 91, of Iron River, MI passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Iron River Care Center. Alice was born on March 13, 1923 in Stambaugh, MI, the daughter of the late Fred and Emma (Erbin) Hereau. She was a lifelong resident of the Iron River area. She attended Bates School and Iron River High School, graduating in 1941. She married Bert Johnson on October 3, 1942 in Iron River and traveled with her husband while he was in the service. After his honorable discharge, the couple made their home in Iron River. Alice and Bert celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1992. She was the secretary at the Iron River High School and later for West Iron County Schools, retiring in 1985. Alice was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher, the Priscilla Circle at the church, the Quilting Group at the church, and a former Lady Elk. She was an avid reader and enjoyed baking, sewing and quilting. She was a loving mother figure to family and numerous others. She was preceded in death by her husband Bert in 1995, brother, Raymond Hereau, and five sisters, Viola Andreski, Agnes Berquist, Eunice Helgemo, Lucille Clements, and Dorothy Midbrod. Alice is survived by her son, James (Susan) Johnson of Negaunee, MI; daughter, Karen (Robert) Williams of Caledonia, MI; brother, Wallace Hereau of New Berlin, WI; sister, Emma Rowell of Green Bay, WI; four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Visitation will be held Monday, July 21, 2014 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church of Iron River. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. Bonny Kinnunen to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery The family suggests memorial donations to the First Lutheran Church of Iron River.
