Alice Carlson Rhode, age 85 of Iron River, MI, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rhinelander, WI, after a short illness. Born: August 27, 1924 in Silverhill, AL The daughter of the late Paul and Gudrun (Erickson) Anderson attended and graduated from North Shore High School, Chicago, Il in 1942. She then attended Augustana School of Nursing in Chicago, graduating in 1946. She first started her nursing career at Stambaugh General Hospital and worked as a nurse in the local community, pausing for a short time to start a family and returning in 1960 to work for the Dickinson-Iron County Public Health Department. She started Hospice in Iron County. Her nursing career covered over 30 years until her retirement in 1985. Alice married George Carlson on October 24, 1947 and the couple made their home in Stambaugh Township. George preceded her in death on February 8, 1981. She later married Edward Rhode on August 31, 1985 and he preceded her in death on August 3, 2006. She has been and currently was an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River, Lutheran Altar Society, the Church Board, Eastern Star, and Michigan Nurses Association. She was also preceded in death by her sister, She is survived by two sons; Leif (Carol) Carlson of Lansing, MI Kurt (Sharon) Carlson of Minneapolis, MN Daughter, Kristine (Richard) Mack of Iron River 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren Visitation: Saturday September 5, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the First Lutheran Church, Iron River. Funeral Service: Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 12:00 noon at the First Lutheran Church, Iron River, With Rev. Bonny Kinnunen to officiate. Interment: Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron River Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River.
