Alma Maria Purgatorio, age 101 of Iron River, MI died Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the Iron River Care Center, Iron River. Born: July 20, 1907, Calumet, MI The daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Rossi) Ponozzo moved to Gaastra as a young child where her father owned and operated a small candy store. The family moved to Gibbs City where she attended school. She married Gust Purgatorio and the couple made their home in Iron River Township. She waitressed and cooked at the former Roma Cafe for many years before purchasing the restaurant. She retired in 1968 and later moved to Iron River to make her home. Alma was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, and the St. Agnes Altar Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gust, in 1973; sisters, Santa Ponozzo, Edith Delriva and Clara Kucinski; brothers, Joseph, James, Louie, Ernie and John Ponozzo. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Abata of Madison, WI Nieces and nephews and extended family Visitation: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River Funeral Service: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Iron River with Rev. Dan Moll to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment: Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River. Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River.
