Father Aloysius J. Hasenberg, age 93, of Watersmeet, MI, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016. Father Hasenberg was born July 20, 1922 in Ewen, MI, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Bouvier) Hasenberg. He was educated in the Ewen Public Schools and following graduation from high school, he went to study for the priesthood at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, WI from 1941 to 1944. He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1949 in St. Peter’s Cathedral in Marquette by Bishop Thomas L. Noa. His first assignment was Assistant at St. Ann’s in Menominee from 1949 to 1952. From 1952 to 1953, he was assigned to be Chaplain at the V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain, MI and also to be Assistant at St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s. In September of 1953, he left to study at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. where he received his M.A. degree majoring in education. Upon his return to the U.P. in 1955, he was named Superintendent of Holy Name High School in Escanaba and in 1958 he became Acting Superintendent of Education in the Diocese of Marquette. He was Pastor of St. Rita’s in Trenary from 1958 to 1966 and then assigned to Calumet where he amalgamated four churches in to one, St. Paul the Apostle. In 1968 he came to Iron River and became Pastor of St. Agnes until his retirement in July of 1997. Father Hasenberg joined the National Guard in 1952 and remained as Chaplain in the Guard for 23 years. He went to camp with the Guardsmen in the summers both at Camp Grayling and Camp Haven, an experience he very much enjoyed. He retired from the National Guard with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Hasenberg, and sisters, Mary Lonthowski and Louise Daigneault. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Central Time at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River, and Thursday, January 28 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ewen. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Eastern Time by Rev. George Maki, with the Diocean Priests to concelebrate. Interment will be in Ewen Cemetery in the spring.
