Arthur “Art” J. Maki, age 91, of Iron River, MI, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at Northstar Health System, Iron River. He was born March 25, 1922 in Caspian, MI, the son of the late Felix I. and Saima (Honkala) Maki. He attended the Palatka and Stambaugh Schools. He was a U.S Army Veteran of WWII, serving as a Paratrooper in the European Theater. Art married the former Helen A. Petroff on August 27, 1947 in Iron River and the couple were lifelong residents of the area. Art was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Iron River, VFW Ottawa Post #3134, American Legion Reino Post #21, and 82nd Paratrooper Club. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, playing cards, and spending time with family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; daughter, Kathleen Maki; son, Kurt Maki; son-in-law, Robert “Bob” Schinella; brother, Arvo Maki; and sisters, Esther Stacey and Edna Olson. He is survived by his sons, Arthur (Paula) Maki, and Ken (Jane) Maki, both of Iron River; daughter, Jane Schinella of Iron River; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family. Private family services will be held. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
