Avonelle “Avie” A. Powell, 89, of Iron River, MI passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, MI.
She was born on July 14, 1937, in Bates Township, MI, the daughter of the late Norman and Betty (Lindeman) Benson. She attended the Bates Township Schools and graduated.
Avie married Ronald “Ron” Powell on February 7, 1959, at the South Range Lutheran Church. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 2017. Ron preceded her in death on December 5, 2017.
She was employed as an LPN at the hospital in Crystal Falls, MI and at Iron County Medical Care Facility. Avie was a member of Grace Covenant Church, the Carrie Jacobs-Bond Quilters, and the Bates Hall Preservation Society. She enjoyed keeping her home and quilting. Avie and Ron loved to travel after retiring, especially spending time in Texas for the winter.
Avie is survived by her sons, Gary (Julie) Powell of Iron River and Roger (Becky) Powell of Amhurst, WI; sisters, Carol Erickson of Iron River and Anncille (Bob) Engel of Oconto Falls, WI; sister-in-law, Pauline Benson of Iron River; grandchildren, Sarah, Zack, Cole, Carson, and Caden; great-grandchildren, Nova, Isla, Zackariah, Dominick, Ezra, Zane, and Remy; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Chester, Cornel, and infant Norman Benson and sisters, Jean Lindbeck and Mona Sarder; brothers-in-law, Lindy Lindbeck, Don Sarder, and Keith Erickson; sister-in-law, Ginny Benson; and granddaughter, Rebecka.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at in Bates Township Cemetery with Pastor Mike Poindexter to officiate.
