Chalmers A. McGreaham, age 83, of Caspian, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at the Aspirus Iron River HospitalHHospital. He was born February 28, 1933, in Stambaugh, Michigan, the son of the late Chalmers and Meta (Wege) McGreaham. He attended Stambaugh High School, graduating with the Class of 1950. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. Following his service, he attended Michigan Technological University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He was first employed by the Falk Corporation in Wisconsin, then in Michigan at Lakeshore and by the M.A. Hanna Mining Company at the Groveland Mine. Following the mine closure, he worked for the Niagara Paper Mill, then as Iron River City Manager, before assuming the head of Iron County Road Commission until retirement in 1998. Chalmers married Rose Marie “Mitzi” Shepich on November 7, 1954 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Caspian, Michigan. The couple recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where he was a Lay Reader and a member of the Holy Name Society of Caspian. He was selected by the Iron County Historical Museum as Historian of the Year in 2005. Through the years, he was also a member of Iron County Road Commission, Engineers’ Club, American Legion, Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department (volunteering for over 30 years), the Caspian Senior Housing Organization and Caspian City Commissioner. He was the former president of the Caspian Progressive Men and of the Caspian Cable Television Company. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, home improvement, carpentry, and spending time with family and friends. Chalmers is survived by his wife, Mitzi; sons, David (Kathy) of Traverse City, MI, and Dan (Amy) of Plover, WI; sister, Marianne Hanold of Stambaugh, MI; grandchildren, Brett McGreaham, Kaylee (Jared) Kehler, Luke, Kelsey, Allison and Rachel McGreaham; sisters-in-law, Jackie McGreaham and Nancy Shepich and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Douglas, brother, Charles, and sisters, Marguerite Carlson and Maren Steele. Visitation will be held Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. The Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department will do a walk through during the visitation. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian with Father Jose Maramattam to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
