Charles H. DellAngelo, age 95, of Iron River, MI, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Aspirus Hospital Iron River. Charles was the son of the late Charles R. and Orsulina (Malvaio) DellAngelo. He was born July 4, 1920 in Diorite, MI. Charles married the former Lucille Gauthier on February 8, 1947 in Ishpeming, MI. The couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this year. Together they have two children, Ann and Greg. He attended the Ishpeming High School until 11th grade, when he left to join the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for 18 months then joined the U.S. Army. Charles volunteered for overseas duty in World War II as a machine gunner in the 90th Infantry, Texas/Oklahoma Division. He landed in England on April 1, 1944. Charles participated in the D-Day Invasion landing on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. He fought in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. He was wounded three times receiving three Purple Hearts, Combat Badge, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon with four Stars, Victory Medal WWII Bronze Medal, and a Presidential Citation. Charles received an Honorable Discharge on December 20, 1945. After returning from the Army, he married Lucille and worked for Inland Steel at the Morris Mine in Northlake, MI until the mine closed. They moved to Iron River in 1963 where he worked at the Sherwood Mine as a Hoist Operator until retiring in 1978. Charles was given an honorary diploma from Ishpeming High School in 2002 for being a World War II Veteran. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Iron River Elks Lodge, the VFW Ottawa Post #3134 of Iron River, and the DAV. He enjoyed fishing with his wife and spending lots of time at their family camp in Gibbs City on the Paint River until his health declined. Charles was a very loving, and giving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great, great grandfather. He also loved their family dog, Millie. He was preceded in death by his brother, Colonel John “Jack” DellAngelo and sister, Patricia Bonovich. Charles is survived by his wife, Lucille; daughter, Ann (Frank) Raymond of Iron River; son, Greg (Lynn) DellAngelo of Iron River; brother, Andrew DellAngello of Ishpeming, MI; three grandchildren, Lori Petts and Michael Andler, both of Iron River, and Robyn (Tim) Cayemberg of Marinette, WI; six great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; many special nieces, nephews, and extended family. Visitation will be held Monday, November 16, 2015 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the service.Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
