Charlotte D. Karney

Charlotte D. Karney, age 93, of Iron River, MI, passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI. Charlotte was born December 4, 1921 in Bates Township, MI, the daughter of the late Charles August and Lydia (Krans) Johnson. She attended the Rogers School in Bates Township and graduated from Iron River High School with the Class of 1939. She then attended the Augustana School of Nursing in Chicago, IL, graduating in 1945 and earning her RN. She was employed by Stambaugh General Hospital and the Iron-Dickinson Health Department. In her middle years, Charlotte also served as caregiver to several of her older relatives. Charlotte married Chester M. Karney on August 5, 1944 in Stambaugh, MI, and the couple lived in Nasarssuak, Greenland from 1946 to 1948 and in Indian Orchard, MA from 1948 to 1953. The couple returned to the Iron River area in 1953 to make their home. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2014. Chester preceded her in death on February 16, 2015. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River and the First Lutheran Women’s Association. She was an avid pinochle and bridge player. Charlotte is survived by her son, Scott (Carole) Karney of Springfield, VA; daughter, Kerry (Timm) Retzloff of Washburn, WI; grandchildren, Evan Karney, Audrey Karney (Micky Ronis), Katie (David) Walters, Kristin Retzloff (Ian Schoenike), and Lauren Retzloff (Eric Bush); nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Glenn Johnson. Visitation will be held Monday, September 21, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at I2 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Laakko to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River.
