David J. Kunchynski, 52, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He was born on June 17, 1973, in Bloomington, IL, the son of Don and Diane (Brinker) Kunchynski. David attended the West Iron County Schools, graduating with the class of 1991. He then pursued his passion in teaching math at Northern Michigan University, graduating in 1995. David substitute taught in surrounding school systems until starting full-time at West Iron County in 1998 as a middle school math teacher.
He was a member of the MEA Teachers Union. He loved nature, gardening, watching the birds that would come into the yard, and especially Christmas decorating and joy of all things Christmas. He took care of his family and pets like no other. David had a passion for teaching and impacted countless lives. His students were always impressed with Mr. Kunchynski being on the cutting edge of technology. He could always help with tech related problems with his students and colleagues alike. His loss will affect an entire community for years to come.
David is survived by his parents, Don and Diane Kunchynski; brother, Dean Kunchynski and fur brother, Dexter Lee Kunchynski; aunts and uncles, Kim and Gary Kunchynski and Mike Kunchynski; cousins, Dan Skaleski, Doreen Mitchell, Dana Guns, Drew Skaleski, Jenny Nowicki, Delaney Dobson, Shelly Purdy, and Sherry Blanchett; many second cousins; and very special friends and colleagues, Kelly Sartorelli, Patty Steinberg, Beth Basirico, and Jennifer Schive.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leonard and Barbara Kunchynski and Lester and Rose Brinker, Aunt Doty (Brinker) Chapin, Uncle Lance Brinker, Aunt Jean Kunchynski, cousin Darren Skaleski, and fur brothers, Sparky, Sully, and Skippy.
Private services will be held.
Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be set up in David’s memory with information to follow.
