Donald Hooper, age 90, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. He was born on April 11, 1932, in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late William and Gladys (Porter) Hooper. He attended the local schools and later attended North Park College for two years. Donald was a US Army Veteran, serving for four years where he helped build air strips and was a heavy equipment operator. Donald married Esther Hill on April 11, 1953. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in 2022. He was the owner of DH Transfer Long Haul Trucking for 30 years. Donald along with Geno Giuliani assisted with underwater recoveries and rescues for many years. Their work prompted the Michigan State Police to create their own group. He was also a welder and fabricator and over the years has been involved in logging and farming. Donald also raised geese and made goose down pillows. He worked in underground mining for 10 years as an explosive engineer. Donald had been the director and manager for Covenant Point Bible Camp and provided 22 horses for campers and trail rides. Donald is survived by his wife, Esther; sons, Rock, David, and Douglas Hooper; daughter, Holly (Troy) Hooper; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford, Clyde, and Bill. Per Donald’s wishes, there will be no services.
