Dorothy M. Makela

Dorothy M. Makela Age 85 Iron River, MIDied Friday December 3, 2010 at the Tuscany House in Summerfield, FL. Born: February 27, 1925 in Menahga, MN. The daughter of the late John and Hilda (Hatala) Laine grew up in Chicago and attended the Chicago schools. She married Reynolds ""Rey"" Makela June 11, 1941 in Stambaugh, MI, and the couple made their home at Camp Lake. Dorothy assisted her husband in the operation of the Forest Gateway, which they owned and operated from 1967 until their retirement in 1980. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2009 and Reynolds preceded her in death on May 14, 2010. Dorothy""s family was her pride and joy. She enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards, embroidery, knitting, traveling in their RV and wintering in Florida. She was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church of Iron River. She was also preceded in death by brothers; Donald, Warren, Ralph and Infant brother James Laine, a sister Delores ""Babe"" Tapio and granddaughter Wendy Olson. She is survived by a son, Richard ""Butch"" Makela of Kingsford, MI Daughter, Sheila (Wayne) Olson of Iron River Brother, Delano ""Duke"" (Diane) Laine of Duluth, MN Sisters, Gerri Karrcheski of Chicago, IL Betty Nordstrom of Iron River Clara Swanson of Iron River Five grandchildren: Heidi (Wayne) Westphal Lisa (Pete) Peterson, Amy (Chuck) Schmit, Betty Ann Wally and Lori Jean Makela. Seven great grandchildren Nieces, nephews and extended family Graveside services will be held Friday, May 13, 2011 at 10:00 a.m at Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River, with Rev Ray Kovala to officiate.
