Dorothy M. Mellstrom

Dorothy M. Mellstrom, age 108, of Iron River, MI, passed away on February 1, 2025 at the Iron River Care Center. She was born June 25, 1916 in Iron River, MI, the daughter of the late John, Sr. and Elizabeth (Walsh) Scott. She attended the Ice Lake and Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School with the Class of 1934. Dorothy married William L. Mellstrom on September 18, 1937 at St. Agnes Catholic Church Rectory. The couple celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 1995. William preceded her in death on February 29, 1996. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and sharing information about things she had experienced growing up in another era. Dorothy is survived by her children, Arlene Shovald of Salida, CO and Lois (Mike) Brozak of Iron River; grandchildren, Robert (Nancy) Shovald, Terri (Scott Brooks) Shovald, Richard (Debbie) Shovald, William (Eliza) Mellstrom, Nicole (Luke) Purkey, and Joseph Brozak; daughter-in-law, Jean Mellstrom; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; nieces and nephews; her special “little girl”, Emily Fredrickson and best friend, Bonnie Bobnock. She was also preceded in death by her son, Lawrence Mellstrom; son-in-law, Robert Shovald; brothers, John, William, and Earl Scott; sisters, Marion Scott and Grace Anderson; granddaughters, Anne Shovald and Sherry Mellstrom; granddaughter-in-law, Terri Anne Shovald; and several sisters and brothers-in-law. A visitation will be held Friday February 7, 2025, from 10:00am to 11:00am at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. A Liturgy of the Word service will follow at 11am with Fr. Daniel Dapaah to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in the spring.
