Edward J. Ambach, age 91, of Iron River, MI, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain. He was born April 8, 1925 in Caspian, MI, the son of the late Conrad and Virginia (Margoni) Ambach. He attended the Caspian and Stambaugh Schools, graduating with the Class of 1943. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force, stationed in London. He served during WWII, participating in 35 missions in Europe with the Eighth Air Force, as a tail gunner. Edward was honorably discharged in 1945. Edward married the former Luella Jeffers on October 12, 1957 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Caspian, and they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this year. The couple were lifelong residents of the area. He was employed as an electrician for M.A. Hanna Mining Company for 14 years. Then later, he worked in the Panama Canal Zone, as an electrician. Upon returning to the states, he finished his employment as a construction electrician. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local #219, retiring in 1986. Edward was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River. His love of God and his Catholic faith were very important to him. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Edward is survived by his wife, Luella; nephew, Robert Greenlund; nieces, Nancy (Badini) Khoury, Carol (Ghiggia) Savage and Mary Jo Greenlund; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Molly Jeffers, and their children, Rickie and Robert Jeffers, and Suzanne Mathison. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Anthony, and sisters, Mary, Edith Judd, Rose Ghiggia, Julia Badini and Josephine Greenlund. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. An additional visitation will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the church, following the service.
