Edward ""Nipper"" S. Applin Age 97 Iron River, MI Died Monday, August 20, 2012 at Northstar Health System in Iron River. Born October 20, 1914 in Iron River, MI The son of the late Fred and Mary Ann (O'Connell) Applin attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School. He was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Edward married the former Edith Garrett on June 15, 1946 in Iron River, and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2006; Edith preceded him in death on August 6, 2006. He was employed by Haydon Oil Company and later as an electrician by M.A. Hanna Mining Company, retiring from the Groveland Mine in 1976. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and gardening, but his family was the most important thing in his life. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, John; nine brothers, Leroy, Tom, William, Bernard, Glenn, Manch, Ben, Roland, and Dale; four sisters, Vera Paraventi, Evelyn Marcell, Maude Machalk, and Fern Marcell. He is survived by one son, Richard (Jan) Applin of Fenton, MI Three daughters, Nancy (Robert) Bal of Whitefish Bay, WI Cheryl (Robert) Chilmonik of Cape Coral, FL Lori (Glenn) Cagle of Iron Mountain, MI One brother, Claude (Anne) Applin of Helena, MT One sister, Geraldine (Joseph) Schober of Iron River Sisters-in-law, Grace Applin of Rhinelander, WI Betty Applin of Iron Mountain, MI Lorraine Applin of McMillan, MI Caroline Applin of Iron River, MI Nine grandchildren, John and Laurie Applin Julie White Erik Bal Jamie Mercer Kathryn and Kimberly Chilmonik Shawn and Chad Cagle Three great grandchildren, Alia Applin Morgan and Carson White Numerous nieces and nephews Visitation: Friday, August 24, 2012 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River. Funeral Services: Friday, August 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Pallbearers: John Applin, Robert and Erik Bal, Robert Chilmonik, Glenn, Chad and Shawn Cagle Interment: Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River.
