Edwin A. Redig, Jr., age 83, of Gaastra, MI, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, MI He was born on June 18, 1938, in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Edwin A. and Milda (Zierler) Redig Sr. and raised on their family farm in Alvin, WI. He attended the Iron River Schools and graduated from Iron River High School with the class of 1956. Edwin married his high school sweetheart Carol Menghini on June 25, 1960, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River, MI. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2021. After completing a 3 ½ year apprenticeship with Allis Chalmers, in Milwaukee, WI, he moved back to the Iron River area and began logging. Edwin then formed the business Redig & Meyer Logging Co with David Meyer Sr. After David passed away, he began his own company, Redig Logging, Inc. Edwin received an award from the Michigan Timber Producers for excellence in logging and was also named Iron County Native Son in Agriculture. He received an award from the Iron County Timberman’s Association for his dedication in the formation of the Logging Expo at the Iron County Fair, and the scholarship fund through the Iron County Timberman’s Association. Edwin was a former member of the Iron River Elks Lodge #1671, where he was honored as Elk of the Year. He belonged to the Michigan Timberman’s Association, the Iron County Timberman’s Association, and the Iron Range Snowmobile Club. Edwin was Vice President and later President of the Michigan and Wisconsin Timber Producers Association of Rhinelander, WI. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling. Edwin also enjoyed spending time at hunting camp and having coffee with friends. He was a loving son, husband, brother-in-law, cousin, uncle, and friend. Edwin is survived by his wife, Carol Redig; brothers-in-law, August (Claudia) Menghini Jr of Green Bay, WI and Terry (Sue) Menghini of Iron River, MI; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Nyle) Parchim of Natchitoches, LA; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jeffrey Menghini and sister-in-law, Sharon (Ralph) Trapasso, and in-laws, August and Evelyn Menghini. A graveside service at Stambaugh Cemetery will be held in the spring.
