Elzmer E. Ehlinger

Elzmer E. Ehlinger, age 90, of Iron River, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI. He was born May 30, 1926 in White Lake, WI, the son of the late Joseph and Henrietta (Hoeffs) Ehlinger.          He attended the Iron River Schools and graduated from Newberry High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army for 23 years and later worked at the Iron River Post Office for 20 years. After retiring from the post office, he volunteered for 22 years at St. Vincent DePaul.     Elzmer married the former Lucy Spencer on August 18, 1951 at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, and the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and VFW Ottawa Post #3134. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking, especially making toys for his grandchildren.  Elzmer is survived by his wife, Lucy; son, Edward (Kim) Ehlinger of Iron River; brothers, Merlyn “Popeye” (Lillian Tschury) Ehlinger of Iron River, Duane Ehlinger of Green Bay, WI; sisters, Ramona (Wayne) Norton of Moab, UT, Sandy (Wayne) Thibodeau of Stambaugh, MI; sister in law, Lorraine Ehlinger of Iron River; two grandchildren, Ryan (Heidi) and Michael (Amber); three great grandchildren, Joey, Alyx and Amryn; nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Burton Ehlinger and DeLou “Dude” Ehlinger; granddaughter Erin Gibbens. Visitation will be held Friday, September 16, 2016 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at 10:45 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Deacon Robert Kostka to officiate. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Alvin, WI.
