Eugene “Gene” E. Yackel, age 77, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at Aspirus Iron River Hospital. Eugene was born on April 4, 1944 in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Edward and Lucille (Duff) Yackel. He attended the Stambaugh Schools. He served with the Michigan National Guard for eight years and was honorably discharged with the rank of SP5. He worked for Meyer Provision Company for 19 years. He contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome thus causing a permanent disability. He was a member of The American Legion Reino Post 21. Gene was a very caring and thoughtful man and was always trying to help someone. He enjoyed cooking and was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman. Gene is survived by his sons, Edward (Matt) and Michael (Joni) Yackel; daughters, Carla (Oliver) Grossman and Katie (Lucas) Glanc; grandsons, Carver Grossman and Daniel Yackel; granddaughters, Bradley Yackel and Charlotte Dvorscak; brothers, Dennis (Jan) and Edwin Yackel; sisters, Susan (Daniel) Passamani and Krissy Yackel; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at 1:00pm on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at the Bates Township Cemetery and a Celebration of Life will be follow at 2:00pm at the Bates Township Park Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to local Veterans organizations of your choice.
