Eva K. Peterson, age 91, formerly of Iron River, MI, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Evergreen Assisted Living, Kingsford, MI. She was born December 27, 1924 in Astoria, OR, the daughter of Herman and Fanny (Saarala) Wirkkula. She attended and graduated from the Astoria schools and later attended nursing school. Eva met George P. Peterson at the Soumi Dance Hall in Astoria where he called her "sugarfoot" because of her sweet dancing ability. They married on February 16, 1944 in Alameda, CA, and the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2014. George preceded her in death on July 7, 2014. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the American Legion Alfred Branchini Post #17 Auxiliary of Iron River. Eva was a charter member of the Iron River TOPS Club. Eva enjoyed sewing, knitting, fishing, camping, traveling, and especially being a mother to her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Charles and Reino Wirkkula, and sister, Tyne Westman. Eva is survived by her sons, George (Patsy) Peterson of Crystal Falls, and Robert “Bob” (Marcia) Peterson of Norway, MI; daughters Sue (Terry) Read of Iron River, and Connie Hager of Negaunee, MI; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Visitation will be held Monday, April 25, 2016 from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Luther Room of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. LaVonne Stephenson to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
