Frank S. Vargovich, age 85 of Iron River, MI, died peacefully Friday September 17, 2010 at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Medical Center, Iron Mountain, MI after a courageous battle with cancer. Born: April 21, 1925 in Ironwood, MI He was one of ten children born to the late George and Anna Povlinski) and attended the Ironwood schools. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze star and was honorably discharged in 1946. Frank married the former Violet Migazzi on February 20, 1953 and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2003. Violet preceded him in death in September 2008. Frank was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gathering mushrooms and cutting wood. Frank was a self-taught musician and loved to play the banjo and harmonica for his family. He especially enjoyed riding his four wheeler on the trails around his home. Frank liked to say he was a ""Jack of all trades, master of none."" He was self-employed most of his life as a plumber and barber. He attended Barber School in Detroit and set up a shop in his home. He is survived by his four children, Randolph (Lynn) Vargovich of Auburn, California, Cynthia (Victor) Cocco of Salisbury, North Carolina, Susan (William) Jacobson of Amasa, MI, and Sandra Vargovich of Caspian, MI; his grandchildren , who were the lilght of his life, Mark (Sparkie), Courtney, Brandon, Jeff, Ryan, Bill and Amanda; a brother Steve Vargovich of Bessemer, MI. The family will hold a private service per Frank's wishes. Interment; Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron River Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River.
