Gary Smith, aged 65 years old, passed away on the 24th of January 2018 in Costa Rica. Gary was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on April 11th, 1952, the son of the late Charles Smith and Patricia O’Brien. His family later moved to Wisconsin and he graduated from Suring High School in June of 1970. Gary honorably served in the military from 1972-1983. During his career, he was employed by Angeli’s Central Market for 25 years working initially as a butcher and eventually working his way to store director. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching football, spending time with his grandchildren, and traveling to Costa Rica. Gary is survived by his sons, Kyle (Haley) Smith and Mike Smith; daughter, Cassie (Brad) Barstow; ex-wife Amber Roetzer; grandchildren, Lillian and Hadley Barstow, and Chloe and Beau Smith, with one granddaughter on the way; stepfather, Michael (Linda) O’Brien; siblings, Wendy (Gary) DeHart, Debra (Earl) Budd, Jeff (Jean) Smith, Rick Smith (Cheryl), Clay (Chrissy) Smith, Patrick (Jenifer) O’Brien; step-siblings, Shawn O’Brien and Kelly McDonald; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. From his family: Gary was extraordinarily hardworking, generous, humble and a purveyor of obscure nicknames as well as a loving father, brother and friend. His children would like to extend a special thanks to Fred & Beth Angeli, as well as Don & Carol Bastianello for their help throughout this process. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Jacobs Funeral Home at 405 West Cayuga Street in Iron River.
