George P. Peterson, age 93, of Iron River, MI, died on Monday, July 7, 2014 peacefully in his sleep at home surrounded by his family. He was born June 24, 1921 in Iron River, MI, the son of Peter and Anna (Syrsted) Peterson. He attended the Iron River Schools. George was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. He was employed by M.A. Hanna Mining Company in the local mines for over 25 years.George married the former Eva K. Wirkkula on February 16, 1944 in Alameda, CA. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past February. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and American Legion Alfred Branchini Post # 17 of Iron River. George enjoyed running, cycling, fishing, golfing, woodworking, playing the harmonica, and frequent camping with family, especially trips to Oregon.He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edgar and Arthur, and sisters, Marie Spigarelli, Goodie Hedlund, and Lucille “Buzz” Poulos.George is survived by his wife, Eva; sons, George (Patsy) Peterson of Crystal Falls, and Robert (Marcia) Peterson of Norway, MI; daughters Sue (Terry) Read of Iron River, and Connie Hager of Negaunee, MI; sister, Ruth Cattani of Green Bay, WI; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home with Rev. Bonny Kinnunen to officiate. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the service. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
