Georgietta “Georgie” F. Melchiori, age 90, of Iron River, MI, passed away May 10, 2016, at the Iron River Care Center where she had been living since 2009. She was born October 5, 1925 in Iron River, MI, the daughter of the late Frank and Georgietta (Bastedo) Meehean. She grew up in Mineral Hills, attended the Iron River Schools, graduating from Iron River High School with the Class of 1943. After high school, as part of the war effort she moved to Richland, Washington, where she joined thousands of other Americans working on the Manhattan Project, the research and development project that produced the first atomic bomb during World War II. Georgie married Willard “Pidge” Melchiori on July 2, 1949 in Stambaugh, MI. They made their home in the James Location of Mineral Hills, across the street from where Georgie grew up. Willard preceded her in death on November 5, 1969. Georgie worked with the West Iron County Schools as a custodian and in their Hot Lunch Program. She was employed by Coleman Products for 10 years until it closed in 1986, and worked at the Central Arts & Gifts until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iron River and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her son Richard “Dick” Melchiori in March of 2002; infant granddaughter Maria Melchiori in June of 1980; as well as brothers, Kenny, Wayne and Leslie “Luddy”, Meehean; and sisters Elsie Taetsch and Jeanette “Nettie” Nichols. Georgie is survived by her sons, Tony (Mary) Melchiori of Marshfield, WI, and Chris (Tina) Melchiori of Fremont, OH; daughter-in-law, Roxane Melchiori of Appleton, WI; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Georgie always loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren, taking them to parks and beaches in the summer and watching them play hockey in the winter. Visitation will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Iron River. Memorial services will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Dawn Treado to officiate and a luncheon will follow. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery. The family would like to thank the owners and staff of the Iron River Care Center for the excellent care Georgie received while she was a resident there.
