Halldes M. Nocerini

February 23, 1918 — February 18, 2017

Halldes M. Nocerini, age 98, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls. Halldes was born February 23, 1918 in Bergen, Norway. Halldes was one of three daughters of Andrew and Anna (Nielson) Martinson. In 1927, the family emigrated from Norway to the United States to settle in the Bates, Michigan area. She and her sisters attended the Bates and Rogers Schools. Following her graduation from Iron River High School in 1937, Halldes married Sylvester Nocerini, of Iron River on February 12, 1938. They celebrated their 60 years together in 1998.   She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River for more than 80 years. Halldes served with dedication as a member of the Altar Guild, Priscilla Circle of the Lutheran church women and the church quilters. She held memberships in the Lady Elks and Sons of Norway. Over the years she also participated in many community activities, including Scandinavian Days at the Iron County Museum, where she exhibited her collection of items of Norwegian origin. She was employed as a retail clerk at the J.J. Newberry Store of Iron River for 17 years, until its closing in 1972. She found many hours of quiet relaxation in reading, writing, and needlework. Her favorite memories were of the many road trips she and Syl took with their daughters, and the trip to her Norway homeland in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester in 1998; daughter, Carole Ann in 1949 and sisters, Solveig Cone in 1993 and Magnhild Ehlinger in 2004. Halldes is survived by her daughters, Marilynn (Tom) Peterson and Nancy Verhagen; grandsons, Andrew (Manzanita) Peterson and Ryan (Suzanne) Verhagen; great granddaughters, Yrsala and Adeline; great grandsons, Asher, Simon, and Ross; many nieces and nephews, and special cousins, Eleanor Anderson and Audrey Ridolphi. A private gathering is tentatively planned for Spring. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Lutheran Church at 235 E. Genesee Street, Iron River, MI 49935; or to the St. Vincent De Paul food pantry at 313 W. Genesee Street, Iron River, MI 49935.
