Harvey R. Ponozzo

Harvey R. Ponozzo Sr., age 92, of Iron River, MI, passed away Friday, September 11, 2015 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, MI. He was born February 21, 1923 in Gibbs City, MI, the son of the late Joseph and Santa Ponozzo.   He attended the Gibbs City School and Iron River School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea and the Philippines. Harvey was a self-employed logger for 50 years. After retiring he went back to work for Hebert Construction Company as a truck driver. Harvey married the former Elna Norkoli on September 25, 1948 in Marquette, MI. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 2014. He attended the First Baptist Church of Iron River. He enjoyed hunting and being in the woods, especially cutting and splitting his firewood. Harvey also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Harvey is survived by his wife, Elna; sons, Greg Ponozzo and Dennis (Nancy) Ponozzo, both of Iron River; daughters, Cheryl (Larry) Smith of Iron Mountain, MI and Bonnie Ponozzo of Green Bay, WI; grandchildren, Clint, Carrie, Greg Jr., Jeremy, and Dennis Ponozzo, Toni Jaeckels, Gina Wollner, Stefanie Smith, Stacy Daugherty, Monica Minor, Amy Marcell, and Brian Bond; 16 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his sons, Harvey Jr. and Randy Ponozzo; grandson, Craig Ponozzo; brothers, Leonard and Rudy Ponozzo; sisters, Esther DeLaney, Vada Kostreva, and Diane Ponozzo and infant sisters, Esther and Daisy Ponozzo. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Matt Rappley to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside.
