Helen C Han

Helen C. Han passed away at Northstar Health System on March 29, 2015. She was born on April 27, 1918 in Shanghai, China and she emigrated to the United States in 1948. She lived in Mount Clemens, MI and then moved to Pontiac, MI in 1954. She came to Iron River in 1992. Helen married John Maoshing Han on November 27, 1948 and he preceded her in death on August 31, 1985. She graduated from Oakland University in 1967 and taught 2nd grade in the School District of the City of Pontiac. She earned a Master’s Degree in the Teaching of Reading in 1976 and retired in 1984. After moving to Iron River, she was active in volunteer work at West Iron County Schools. She often went to elementary classes to talk about China, teach children how to use chopsticks, and bring some Chinese treats for all to share. Helen did tutor students who had difficulty in learning to read and she had much satisfaction with teaching a developmentally challenged student successfully. Helen was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She enjoyed Chinese painting and knitting. Helen is survived by her sons, David of Auburn Hills, MI and Robert (Deborah) of Iron River; four grandchildren, Maria Han of Los Angeles, CA, Robert Maoshing (Gigi) of Royal Oak, MI, Anthony Han of Ann Arbor, MI, Olivia Han still at home; great granddaughter, Graylee Shea Han of Royal Oak, MI; two nephews, Richard (Josephine) Han of Ann Arbor and S. Charles Han of Phoenix, AZ. Helen was preceded in death by her brother and sister. A memorial service is planned for the end of June in Iron River.
