Helen S. Shubat, age 95, of Iron River (formerly Stambaugh), MI passed away Monday, June 22, 2015 at the Iron River Care Center. She was born June 3, 1920 in Iron River, MI, the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Chmieleski) Kondro. She attended the Iron River Schools. Helen married Anton Shubat on June 29, 1939 at the Assumption Catholic Church of Iron River, and the couple made their home in Caspian until moving to Stambaugh in 1951. Anton preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of the former Assumption Catholic Church of Iron River, where she sang in the choir, and later a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian and St. Ann’s Society. She enjoyed crocheting, bead work, and berry picking, and her greatest joy was being a homemaker. Helen is survived by her daughters, Maureen (Louis) Grailer of Cambridge, MN, Barbara (John) Baumgartner of Iron River, and Kristine Rice of L’Anse, MI; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; nieces, nephews , and extended family. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Johnny, and Bernard, and sisters, Jennie, Rose Marie, Bernice, Dorothy, Camille, and Teckla. Visitation will be held Friday, July 3, 2015 from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Deacon Robert Kostka to officiate. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
