Herman G. Kapla, age 103, formerly of Iron River, MI, passed away January 23, 2016 at the Marian Care Center in St. Paul, MN. Herman was born May 25, 1912 in Iron River, MI, the son of the late Anton and Albina (Kumkoski) Kapla. He attended the Iron River Schools, graduating with the Class of 1931. Herman married the former Eleanor Hill on June 10, 1939 in Iron River, where the couple made their home. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2004. Eleanor preceded him in death in 2005. Herman was employed as a logger with John Stanfanovich and a truck driver with Proksch Construction Company. He also worked for M.A. Hanna Mining Company at the Homer Mine until its closure in 1969. Herman then was employed by Caspian Construction until his retirement in 1972. He and his wife wintered in San Juan, Texas for many years. He was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, the Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus - 3rd Degree Grand Knight. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Kapla in 1957, sister, Josephine Brown, and brother, Anton Kapla. He is survived by his son, William Kapla of Forest Lake, MN; daughter, Celeste (Steve) Murdock of Burnsville, MN; sister, Lucille Matus of Kenosha, Wi; grandchildren, Justin (Solongo), Joshua, Melissa, and John Kapla, and Michael and Diana Murdock; great grandchildren, Ermuunburged, Evelyn and Olivia; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday, January 29, 2016 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. The Knights of Columbus will form an Honor Guard at the visitation and service. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River.
