Hillard W. Spencer, age 85 of Nelma, WI, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A. Medical Center, Iron Mountain, MI. Born: August 21, 1924 in Nelma, WI The son of the late Claud and Carrie (Thrasher) Spencer attended the Elvoy School in Nelma. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. He moved to Chicago and worked for Motorcar Transport; he later transferred to Pontiac, MI, retiring from Leaseway Transportation in 1986. After retirement, he returned to Nelma to make this home. Hillard married the former Palma Tamburello; she preceded him in death. He married Karen (Sweeney) Young/Maxfield on July 27, 2002 in Iron River, MI and the couple made their home in Nelma. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Phelps, WI and the American Legion of Phelps. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Karen Son, Claude of Nashville, TN Daughter, Christine Millerwize of California Brothers; Duard Spencer of Nelma, WI Floyd (Eileen) Spencer of Greendale, WI Armond (Ann) Spencer of Canton, NY Gayland (Mary Ann) Spencer of Metamora, IL Sisters; Jeston Knuth of Germantown, WI Lucy (Elzmer) Ehlinger of Iron River, MI Rosetta (Jerry) McMahon of Iron River, MI Two grandchildren; Kristin Addison and Wesley Spencer One great grandson, Collin Addison Five step-children Twelve step-grandchildren Six step-great grandchildren Numerous nieces and nephews He was also preceded in death by his brother Garrod ""Todd"" Spencer and sister Mescal Povich. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Phelps, with Rev.Robert J. Koszarek to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment: Lakeview Cemetery, Alvin, WI. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside service.
