James R. Oberg, born July 3, 1952, in Stambaugh, Michigan, passed away on October 19, 2026.
James proudly served 13 years in the United States Navy before beginning a career with the Michigan Department of Transportation, where he eventually retired. Retirement didn't slow James down. He and his beloved wife, Ruth, began traveling across the United States, surveying pipeline projects and making memories along the way.
James loved Ruth deeply and would do anything for her. His greatest joys were spending time with his wife, family, and friends. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and being outdoors. James was a man who was always on the go, always keeping busy, and always ready for his next adventure. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, and love that will never be forgotten.
James is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Oberg; his sons, Gar (Shannon) Lutes and Ger (Kim) Lutes; his grandchildren, Alexis, Ashlyn, Luella, and Parker Lutes; his brother, Mark (Lynn) Oberg; his sister-in-law, Esther Oberg; along with many other family members and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Bernice Oberg, and his brother, Robert Oberg.
James will be remembered for his dedication, his love for his family, his adventurous spirit, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. Though he will be deeply missed, his love and legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, 405 W. Cayuga Street, Iron River, Michigan with Pastor DJ Rasner to officiate. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites before the service.
