James O. Wester, 77, of Iron River, MI passed away on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. On Friday, July 24, Jim suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while at the VFW. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the many friends and bystanders in attendance who immediately jumped into action to perform life-saving CPR. Jim was transported by EMS to Aspirus Iron River and later airlifted to Aspirus Wausau. Despite the heroic efforts of the community and the exceptional care of the medical teams, Jim passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. The family wishes to thank everyone involved in his emergency rescue and subsequent care process during this difficult time.
He was born on July 14, 1949, in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Oliver and Elaine (Nyquist) Wester. Jim attended the Iron River Schools, graduating with the Class of 1967. He then earned a degree in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University.
Jim married Kay LaFountain on September 5, 1970, at Grace Covenant Church in Stambaugh. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in 2024. Kay preceded him in death on January 15, 2025. They took great care of one another over the years and enjoyed spending their time with family, friends and traveling.
He was employed at the Iron County Road Commission for many years and worked at the M.A. Hanna Mining company prior to that. Jim was a Founding Father, treasurer and part of the Scholarship Board of the Classic Farm Machinery Club of Iron County, a member of the Engineering Club and the VFW Auxiliary. Jim had also been a volunteer fireman for the City of Stambaugh.
Jim enjoyed spending time at camp, working on tractors, spending time with his family and friends, his dog (current and past), watching Grit TV, a cocktail or two (the first and the last), and mowing and taking care of his lawn. He was a big man with a big voice but an even bigger heart. He was always quick to help others.
Jim is survived by his son, Jamie (Leslie) Wester of Des Plaines, IL; daughter, Carrie (Frank) Rozich of Hinsdale, IL; granddaughter, Ashton Rozich and grandson, Jonas Wester; brother, Daniel (Kim) Wester of Iron River, MI; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A private family gathering will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the VFW in Iron River on September 5, 2026, from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Join the family at the VFW to share memories of Jim.
In remembrance of Jim's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to The Classic Farm Machinery Club/Scholarship Fund by mailing a check (memo Jim Wester) to Fred Hauser 249 E Lake Emily Rd, Crystal Falls, MI 49920.
