Jerry M. Shamion, age 77, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Aspirus Iron River Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 12, 1942 in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Stanley and Margaret (Menghini) Shamion. He attended the Iron River Schools and graduated in 1960. Jerry married Christine Solander on August 1, 1964 at Grace Covenant Church. The couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in 2019. He was a logger and owned and operated Shamco Inc. with his sons. He was a member of Grace Covenant Church of Iron River, the Michigan Association of Timberman, and the Great Lakes Timber Professional Association. Jerry spent over 60 years doing the only job he ever wanted to do - working in the woods. He enjoyed everything about logging, from pulling logs with horses to using cutting edge Ponsse equipment, communicating daily with all the guys, especially his brother Ron. He often said, “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” Even with the demands of running a business family came first. Jerry treasured his large family and attended countless sporting events and school activities for his kids and grandkids. Jerry had an infectious personality that delighted many people. He was quick with a joke or a story that always left people with a smile. Jerry is survived by his wife, Christine; children, Todd (Jessica) Shamion of Crystal Falls, MI, Scott (Vicki) Shamion of Hartland, WI, Amy (Dan) McGreaham of Plover, WI, Eric (Marla) Shamion of Iron River, MI, Molly (Ryan) Wilgreen of Neenah, WI, and Ryan (Megan) Shamion of Crystal Falls, MI; 18 grandchildren, Kelsey (Nate), Kaitlin (Kurt), Allison, Rachel (Victor), Bailey, Elizabeth, Jacob, Carli, Jordan, Bella, Danica, Lacey, Audrey, Bristol, Aubrey, Anders, Evelyn, and Ava; two brothers, five sisters, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and their spouses; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Clarence and Gladys Solander and daughter-in-law, Kim Shamion. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 6, 2020 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Grace Covenant Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am with Rev. James Swanson II to officiate. In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorial contributions may be made to the Iron County Cancer Unit at P.O. Box 45, Iron River, MI., 49935. During Jerry’s battle, he experienced first hand the difficulties of receiving care away from home and expressed a desire to help others in the same situation. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery in the spring.
