John H. Maki, 91, of Iron River, MI, passed away Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Iron River Care Center. He was born March 26, 1922 in Crystal Falls, MI, the son of the late William and Emily Maki. He attended the Stambaugh Schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School with the Class of 1940. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, and Purple Heart recipient. John married the former Lila Salo on June 19, 1954 in Beechwood, MI, and the couple were lifelong residents of the area. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this year. He was employed as a laborer for the City of Iron River for 25 years. John was a member of St. Paul 's Lutheran Church of Iron River, and the Disabled American Veterans. An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed gardening, cutting firewood, and taking long walks. He was a loyal Detroit Lions fan, and loved babysitting his granddaughters. John is survived by his wife, Lila; daughter, Donna J. (Floyd) Banks of Appleton, WI; grandchildren, Lori (John) Wenning, and Leigh (Casey Jensen) Banks; great grandchildren, Dylan Schimelpfnig and Senia Wenning; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gary Markworth to officiate. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the service. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.
