John J. Sporer

John J. Sporer, age 95, of Iron River, MI, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughter by his side on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. He was born on May 1, 1928, in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Valentine Walter and Antonia (Today) Sporer. John attended the Stambaugh Schools and graduated. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Military Police in Japan following World War II. John married Katherine Povich on May 9, 1953, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian, MI. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in 2022. He was employed as an accountant supervisor for M. A. Hanna. John was a member St. Agnes Catholic Church and The American Legion Alfred Branchini Post #17. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and woodworking. John is survived by wife, Kathy Sporer of Iron River, MI; daughter, Sue Sporer of Iron River, MI; grandchildren, Benjamin (Veronica) Gonyeau, Christopher (Chelsea) Gonyeau, and Caitlin (Steve) Atkinson; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He was also preceded in death by his son, John Sporer; brother, Joseph Sporer; and sisters, Tillie Cole, Aileen Fisher, Mary Powell, Judy Sporer, and Katherine Sporer.
