John D. Waite

John ""Jack"" D. Waite Age: 83 Iron River died Wednesday night, August 13, 2008 at the Iron County Community Hospital, Iron River. He was born on May 28, 1925 in Crystal Falls,MI, the son of the late George and Emma (LaPlante) Waite. He attended the Bates and Iron River Schools, graduating with the Class of 1943. He also attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton. He served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII. On July 24, 1948, he married the former Bernice Ratagick at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River and the couple made their home in Iron River, MI. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was employed as an electrician by Pickands-Mather Mining Company and then M.A. Hanna Mining Company retiring in 1981 when the Groveland Mine closed. He was the custodian at the Iron River Senior Housing for many years. He was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Past President of the Holy Name Society, Iron River Elks Lodge #1671, Retired Assistant Chief of the Iron River Fire Department, A.A.R.P. and was active with the Boy Scout Troop #521 at St. Agnes and served on the Credit Union Board of Directors. He was preceded in death by one brother, Meade and four sisters Lefe, Shirley, Mary and Luella. Survived by his wife, Bernice Six sons, John (Debbie) Waite, Iron River, MI Donald (Cheryl) Waite, Baraboo, WI Michael (Theresa) Waite, Almont, MI Tom Waite, Caspian, MI Ray Waite, Iron River, MI Tim (Bille Jo) Waite, Iron River, MI Seven daughters, Peggy (Leo) Angeloff, Quinnesec, MI Carol (David) Callovi, Iron River, MI Patricia Waite, Iron River, MI Donna (Peter) Paraventi, Iron River, MI Mary Jo (Herbert) Hoover, Alvin, WI Joan Waite, Iron River, MI Barbara (Steven) Penkevich, South Lyons, MI 17 Grandchildren; 7 Great Grandchildren Two Sisters; Ina (Robert) Webber, Hoyt Lakes, MN Luree ""Lou"" Baumgartner, Iron River, MI Visitation: Sunday August 17, 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River, MI. The Firefighters of the Iron Range Firemen's Association will attend the visitation at 6:00 p.m. A Liturgical Prayer service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Elks Lodge of Sorrow service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Service: Monday August 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. St. Agnes Catholic Church, Iron River, MI with the Rev. Norman Clisch pastor & Rev. Otto Sartorelli to concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.
