Joseph G. Hanold died December 21, 2015. Mr. Hanold was born in Stambaugh, the son of the late Gustave and Adella (Farrell) Hanold. He was a lifelong resident of Stambaugh. He graduated from the Stambaugh High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations aboard an aircraft carrier. After his honorable discharge he returned to the area. He married the former Marianne McGreaham at St. Mary’s Church in Gaastra. They observed their 66th wedding anniversary in 2015. Mr. Hanold loved gardening and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with friends and neighbors. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He served as a lay minister and parish council member at the former Blessed Sacrament Church in Stambaugh. He was a member of the American Legion Post 21 and a former member of the VFW. Mr. Hanold was employed by the M.A. Hanna Mining Co. for over 31 years, retiring from the Groveland Mine in 1981. He later worked for the U.S Forest Service and was a manager of Spring Valley Apartments in Caspian, retiring in 1992. He is survived by his wife, Marianne of Stambaugh; sons, Jody (Penny) Hanold and John (Lisa) Hanold; daughter, Jane (Kelly) Gustafson, all of the area; brother, Mark Hanold of Bradley, IL.; and six grandchildren, Erin, Kirsten, Sean, Jessica, Michael, and Eric. His son Jeff preceded him in death on August 12, 2013. At his request there will be a private family visitation and funeral service. Interment will be at Stambaugh Cemetery.
