Joseph ""Toots"" Louis Stanchina Jr. Age 90 Caspian, MichiganDied Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Iron River Care Center. Born: May 3, 1920 in Iron River, Michigan The son of the late Joseph and Lena (Giacoletto) Stanchina attended the Stambaugh schools, and graduated from Stambaugh High School. He was a medic in the U.S. Army, a veteran of WWII. He was stationed in the Galapagos Islands off the Coast of South America. He was employed in the local mines and then as a mailman with the U.S. Postal Service. Toots married the former Amelia Shepich in 1948, and she preceded him in death in 1971. He later married the former Theresa Banche on August 11, 1973 at St Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspian and the couple made their home in Caspian. Joseph was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Caspian, Elks Lodge #1671 of Iron River, and the Disabled American Veterans. An avid hunter and fisherman, he also enjoyed umpiring baseball, and collecting and polishing rocks. Joseph was preceded in death by brothers, Daniel, Louis, and Paul Stanchina and sister Genevieve. He is survived by his lovng wife and children, Theresa Stanchina; one son, Jeffrey J. Stanchina of Los Angeles, CA; two daughters, F. Jo Stanchina of Flint, MI and Melanie J. (Dan) Chiconsky of Marquette, MI and her two sons, his grandchildren, Dustin Douglas Esslin and Conrad Michael Esslin; nieces, nephews and extended family Visitation: Friday, November 12, 2010 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspian. Funeral Service: Friday, November 12, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia, Caspian, with the Rev. Norman Clisch, Pastor, to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Pallbearers: Dan Chiconsky (son-in-law), Conrad Esslin (grandson), Dustin Esslin (grandson), Steve Shepich (God-son), Greg Stanchina (nephew) and Dave Kyllonen (friend and neighbor) Interment: Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron RiverThe West Side Veterans Council will accord Military Rites.
