June B. Weeks

September 17, 1918 — May 13, 2015

June Bernice Weeks died at the age of 96 on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Iron River Care Center. June was born in Stambaugh, Michigan on September 17, 1918, the first of five children of Stanley Thomas and Ethel Mae (Jewell) Wales. She married Robert Peters Weeks in Stambaugh on June 22, 1946 and he preceded her in death on March 1, 1989. June graduated from Iron River High School in 1937. She then attended cosmetology school in Iron Mountain and obtained her beautician’s license in 1939. Her first job was at Skog’s Beauty Shop in Iron River. She then operated a shop out of her home and retired in 1995. June loved music and began her musical career playing the trumpet in the Bates School marching band. She then continued to share her talents at the Wesley United Methodist Church directing the choir and serving as pianist and organist. She also taught piano and organ lessons to anyone who was interested. June’s life was based on Christian values. She held many positions in the church through the years and is remembered as being a favorite Sunday School teacher. Her philosophy was to do at least one good deed a day. She loved and cherished her grandchildren. She spent many hours playing Yahtzee and Scrabble with them. She was a dedicated Scrabble player and showed no mercy whenever she could get triple points. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and her nightly challenge was the one in the Iron Mountain Daily News. June’s kitchen was the heart of her home. She was an expert at making Cornish pasties and saffron buns. With only a few ingredients on hand, she could magically whip up a feast for unexpected company. She loved to entertain, and her dining room table was always elegantly set. Her grandchildren have a special memory of going to grandma’s to bake teddy bear bread. June was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Gilbert and Ralph, one sister, Alta, and sister’s-in-law Julie Wales and Beatrice Wales Weeks. She is survived by her sons Bob (Betty) of Iron River, Jerry (Gail) of Iron River, grandchildren Kurt (Heather) Weeks of Swansboro, NC, Theresa Weeks of Iron Mountain, Tara Miller of Scottsdale, AZ, and Ted (Amy) Weeks of Iron River, step grandchildren Jason Czapiga of Bay City, Jenny (Heath) Nowak of Traverse City, great grandchildren Autumn, Summer, Wynter and JT Weeks, step great grandchildren Carson and Caleb Nowak and Naomi Czapiga, sister Dorothy and brother-in-law Gilbert Johnson of Menominee, MI, brothers-in-law Bob Quayle of Ventura, CA and Russ Weeks of Florida, sister-in-law Verna Wales of Iron River, beloved extended family members and special friends Fay Routheaux and Jeanne Cameron. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 10 to 11 am at United Methodist Church with funeral services starting at 11 am Pastor Bruce Steinberg officiating. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Iron River Care Center for taking such good care of June. Their patience and kindness are greatly appreciated.
