Karen “Mama Bear” Bond, age 67, of Iron River, MI, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 with her family at her side. She was born January 15, 1948 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Frank and Katherine (Sporer) Simunjak. She attended York Community High School in Elmhurst, IL, graduating with the Class of 1966. Karen married George Bond on February 14, 1982 on a cruise ship, in Miami, FL. George preceded her in death on April 25, 2007. In July of 1996, she opened UP North Bar and Grille in Iron River, MI, formerly known as Al’s and Sal’s. Karen was on the Board of Directors and served as Treasurer of the Iron River Trail Club and Northwoods Animal Shelter. She was an avid Chicago Bears fan, and enjoyed her dogs, Lexi and Sophie. She also enjoyed four-wheeling, snowmobiling, boating at Sunset Lake, and fishing. She was also preceded in death by her son Gerald D. Weber on April 17, 1992. Karen is survived by her son, Michael Allen (Catherine Wesley) Weber of Iron River; daughter-in-law, Sharon Weber of Caspian; sister, Carol Ann (Gerald) Froeming of Bolingbrook, IL; grandchildren David Michael Weber and Erik Van Weber. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 9:00 to 11:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Dawn Treado Green to officiate.     In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northwoods Animal Shelter.
