Lawrence “Porge” W. Mellstom, age 75, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at UP Health System in Marquette, MI. He was born on February 12, 1944 in Stambaugh, MI, the son of Dorothy (Scott) Mellstrom and the late William Mellstrom. He attended the Iron River Schools, graduating with the Class of 1962. Larry served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Larry married Jean Anthony on May 10, 1975 at the Methodist Church in St. Ignace, MI. The couple celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary this year. He was employed as a forester for the US Forest Service for over 30 years. Larry was a member of the VFW Ottawa Post 3134 in Iron River, the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, the NRA, and the Iron County Historical Museum, where he volunteered for many years. He was also an EMT in Wisconsin and coached Little League and Senior League baseball teams. Larry was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and just being in the outdoors. Larry is survived by his wife, Jean; mother, Dorothy Mellstrom of Iron River, MI; son, William (Elisa) Mellstrom of Dallas, TX; granddaughter, Carolina Jean Mellstrom; sisters, Lois (Mike) Brozak of Iron River, MI and Arlene Shovald of Salida, CO; sisters-in-law, Lucille Gersey of Boyne City, MI, Doris Potter of Houghton Lake, MI, Jane (Jerry) Mundt of St. Ignace, MI, Ruth Anthony of Vanderbilt, MI, and Arlene Kuzmik of Boyne City, MI; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sherri Mellstrom and brother-in-law, Robert Shovald. Per Larry’s wishes, private services will be held. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
