Leland J. Jackson, age 63, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the Iron River Care Center. He was born on October 30, 1955 in Crystal Falls, MI, the son of the late Berwyn and Carol (Lindahl) Jackson. He attended the West Iron County High School in the class of 1973 and received his High School Diploma in 1976 from Marquette Senior High School. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout after overcoming his injuries sustained in a serious auto accident in 1971 that took the life of his father. He was employed part time at Trico Opportunities, Kingsford, MI and at Northpointe, Iron River, MI. He was a member of the Grace Covenant Church in Iron River. He and his mother would spend winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona where he participated in Special Olympics track and field events and won numerous medals for race walks, softball, and bowling. He enjoyed downhill skiing both in Arizona and at Brule Mountain in Iron River. He was awarded the Most Inspirational Athlete award in 1999. He attended Camp Independence at Bay Cliff Heath Camp annually for much of his life. Leland lived independently in an apartment in Iron River with some assistance for a few years. He drove around town in an electric wheelchair and visited McDonalds daily. As he became less mobile, he enjoyed Bingo and especially watching westerns and old reruns on TV. He had a great sense of humor and could make people laugh. Leland is survived by his nephews, Matthew (his daughter Kylah) and Scott Jackson of Queen Creek, AZ and numerous relatives and friends. Besides his parents, Leland was also preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Jackson. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 9:30am to 11:00am at the Grace Covenant Church in Iron River. A memorial service will follow at 11am with Rev. James Swanson II officiating. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery following the memorial service. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Covenant Church.
