Leo Gurchinoff, age 88, of Iron River, MI, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Aspirus Iron River Hospital. He was born October 14, 1928 in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Stephen and Rose (Kanevcevich) Gurchinoff. He attended and graduated from the Stambaugh High School. He then joined the United States Army, proudly serving his country from 1950 to 1952. Leo married Belva Osborne on June 2, 1954 in Indiana. The couple celebrated 52 wonderful years together, before Belva’s passing in May of 2007. He was employed as a Highway Supervisor with the State of Michigan for 25 years. He was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, and watching his granddaughter play softball. He was also a fan of the Detroit sports teams: Red Wings, Tigers and Lions. He will be greatly missed by his grand-dogs, Miss Daisy and Scout. Leo is survived by his daughters, Linda (Randy) Van Ness of Oshkosh, WI, Cindy Gurchinoff, Joan (Dan) Hinch, both of Iron River, MI and Carol (Joe) Clavin of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Justin Van Ness, Emily (Tyler) Plaster, Timothy Gurchinoff, Brian Hinch, Catherine and Collin Clavin; brothers, Thomas (Mary Ann) Gurchinoff, Donald (Colien) Gurchinoff and James (Diana) Gurchinoff; sisters, Leona (Jack) Benson, Sylvia Esbrook, Pauline Jagemann and Lois (Merwyn) Williams; as well as extended family and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons, John in 1975 and Leo in 1987, and his brothers, Peter, Steven, George and Stanley. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Deacon Robert Kostka to officiate. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Alvin, Wisconsin with the West Side Veterans to accord Military Rites at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leo’s honor, to the Northwoods Animal Shelter at 930 Selden Road, Iron River, MI 49935.
