After a courageous battle with cancer Lisa Marie Smith, age 52, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2022, at the Omega House in Houghton, MI. She leaves behind a large family near and far away for whom she loved dearly, as they loved her. She was born on January 28, 1970, in Fort George G. Meade, MD, the daughter of Darrel “Smitty” and Maureen (Loak) Smith. She lived in California, England, Nebraska, and Michigan, prior to moving to the Iron River area at the age of nine. She graduated from West Iron County High School, with the Class of 1989. From 1990 to 1995, she was employed as a Nurse’s Aide at the Iron River Care Center. She moved to New York in 1995 and worked as a Home Health Aide with special needs children until 2000, when she returned to the Bates Township area. She was employed at the Iron River Care Center until 2002, when she retired, due to health reasons. Lisa was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Iron River, served briefly on the Church Council, and was President of WELCA. She was a Sunday School Teacher in the 1990’s and again in 2002 and 2003. She also volunteered at the Northwoods Humane Society, where she adopted her first cat, Althena. Lisa loved to travel and especially enjoyed her trip to Greece in 1999. She also enjoyed visiting her mother’s side of the family in England. She is survived by her mother, Maureen Smith of Iron River, MI; brother, Allan (Peggy) Smith of Iron River, MI; sisters, Dawn Booth of England, Suzanne (Walter) Klinefelter of California, and Sarah (John) Byrd of Texas; nieces, Andrea (Thomas) Bell, Amanda, and Jaimie; nephews, Andrew, Kody, and Jeremy; special friend, Lisa Bartlett; as well as several cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Darrel “Smitty” Smith; paternal grandparents, Anna Mae and Clyde Andrew Smith; maternal grandparents, Olive and Walter John Loak; aunt, Margaret Smith Johnson; uncles, Robert Johnson and Neil Gene Smith. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Interment will be in Bates Township Cemetery In lieu of flowers, Lisa requested donations to the Northwoods Animal Shelter in Iron River.
