Lucille “Lou” I. Yackel, age 88, of Iron River, MI, died September 30, 2014 surrounded by her loving “Angels” at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI. Lou was born January 29, 1926 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the daughter of the late John and Irene (Beaulier) Duff. She attended the Iron Mountain schools. Lou married Edward H. Yackel on December 11, 1942 and the couple were lifelong residents of the area. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2010. She was a Stanley Home Products dealer in her younger years, winning a trip to Washington, D.C. Lou was selected Eagles Mother of the Year in 1960. She and Edward were foster parents from 1959 to 1968 for Iron, Gogebic, and Ontonagon Counties. She worked at Deloria's Red Owl in the meat department. She was the Assistant Librarian for the local high school for many years prior to her retirement. Lou was recognized in the publication “Women of Iron County Michigan”. Lou will be remembered for being kind-hearted, caring, and always helping someone when she could. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward on October 26, 2011, brother Eugene Duff, grandson Andrew Yackel, and great granddaughter Alison Lambert. She is survived by her sons, Eugene, Dennis (Jan) and Edwin Yackel; daughters, Susan (Daniel) Passamani and Krissy (David) Gustafson; seven grandchildren, Edward (Matt), Michael (Joni), and Kyle Yackel, Carla (Oliver) Grossman, Katie (Michael) Dvorscak, Nicole (Jeff) Lambert and Erik Smith; five great grandchildren, Carver Grossman, Bradley and Daniel Yackel, Charlotte Dvorscak, and Mia Lambert; seven step-grandchildren, twelve step-great grandchildren, and four step-great, great grandchildren; special niece, Susie Piatti; special caring friends, Cynthia Yackel, and Sharon Fenske; special home care giver and friend, Pam Martz; nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family is appreciative of her “Angels” who took such loving care of her at the IC Medical Care Facility. There will be no visitation. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, October 25th at 2:30 p.m. at the Bates Township Hall. Interment will be at the Bates Township Cemetery.
